Album of the Year 2014

Album of the Year

Welcome to the Album of the Year article for the year 2014!

As always, this list is a collection of records that moved ME - records that left an impression on ME. I am a big believer in the fact that music is a personal experience, and we all have different tastes - different likes and dislikes. My only purpose for compiling this list is to, perhaps, point you in the direction of something that might move you, and also to give you a glimpse at what moved my life musically during the twelve months we called 2014. This is not about debating which albums are "better," this is simply about the music. It's always about the music here at Dr. Music. With that said, let's talk about my list for the past year....
I personally think there is amazing music available to us each and every year, but we don't always have the good fortune to find it. For me, once again I found an abundance of worthy releases in 2014 that grabbed my attention away from many of the more popular acts of our time. While I was listening to great new acts like Crobot and The Pretty Reckless, I wasn't able to find precious time with favorites like AC/DC, Bob Seger, or Ted Nugent. Remember, the reason you don't see a lot of these great artists on my list is not because their material was not worthy of mention, it is simply because I never got a chance to sit down and absorb their latest releases. There's just too much out there to listen to for one person.

Honorable Mention:
World On Fire - Slash, Homo Erraticus - Ian Anderson, Royal Blood - Royal Blood, Sunset On The Golden Age - Alestorm, Jetpack Soundtrack - Lionize

Lionize - Jetpack Soundtrack ArtworkFile:Homo Erraticus.jpgI would like to tell you a little bit about the selections that I think deserve honorable mention. The two selections that stand out for me are Ian Anderson's Homo Erraticus and Jetpack Soundtrack from Lionize, the side project from members of Clutch. Both of these were in the Top 10 for a fair portion of the year, but the late additions from Crobot and Black Veil Brides nudged them to their current positions. Please know that Homo Erraticus is Anderson's strongest work in quite a while, and the Lionize project is a force that could cause some waves in the future. File:Slash - World on Fire.pngAs far as Slash's World On Fire, it's the one I feel most guilty about. I only got a chance to sit with it a couple of times, but I have a feeling it would have nabbed a spot on the chart if I had devoted more time to it. Myles Kennedy sounded stunning as usual on vocals, and the songs came over as strong and well-crafted.File:Alestorm - Sunset on the Golden Age.jpg Alestorm's Sunset On The Golden Age and Royal Blood's self-titled debut were two releases that I liked very much, but were also disappointed with. I think everyone should know of these two bands. Alestorm is a Scottish "pirate metal" band that uses fiddles and accordions (as well as guitar, bass, and drum) to create an entirely unique sound that makes you want to raise a pewter stein of ale and shout "Arghhh!" I enjoy their sound tremendously, but this wasn't their strongest outing. It deserves to be mentioned for its originality and musicianship, but there is stronger material within their back catalog. As for Royal Blood,File:Royal Blood - Royal Blood (Artwork).jpg they are completely unique in their own right. They are an English duo of a singing bassist and a drummer, and you'd never believe they could achieve their sound without a guitar. Bassist and singer Mike Kerr has really revolutionized the bass guitar here. With no overdubs or sampling, the band cut most of the album in one take, too. I admire that kind of ingenuity and musical integrity. All in all, I don't love all the songs on the record, which sounds a lot like a Jack White record, but I do admire what they did musically and I think it deserves some recognition.

It's always a struggle to find enough time to take in as many artists as I possibly can and to give them a fair amount of listening time. But, I think it's the same situation for all of us. There are some things that just work their way into the fabric of your life. There is certain music that will define 2015 for you. Sometimes it's the same music that touches millions, and other times it's music that only a few come to know. But, it's that personal journey that is so very special to each of us, and I'd like to share my personal journey through 2014 with you....

10.    Blue Horizon - Wishbone Ash
Andy Powell and the classic band that practically invented twin harmony guitars recapture some of their Argus-era with a set of new classics. The legendary English rockers have been trying to bottle the passion and intensity of that Argus release for decades, and this just might be the closest they've ever come. This has all the elements of what made that Argus release great; the twin guitar harmonies, the vocal harmonies, great band chemistry, and rock solid songwriting.

File:Within Temptation-Hydra.jpg
9.      Hydra - Within Temptation
There's no shortage of great symphonic metal, especially those led by powerhouse female vocalists. Capitalizing on the success of bands like Nightwish and Epica within their genre, Within Temptation has finally emerged on the front-lines. They have been putting out great material for almost 20 years now, but this just might be their best. With some guest appearances from the likes of ex-Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen and rapper Xzibit, the band comes alive on each and every track to show the world what they've been missing.

File:ImNotYourSuicide.png
8.      I'm Not Your Suicide - Michael Sweet
I've been a fan of Christian rockers Stryper since the beginning. I always liked their songs and their positive message, but i did feel that singer Michael Sweet's voice was, well, a little too sweet at times. I wasn't always convinced when the band went into something heavy, because Sweet is a clean high tenor. The heavier material didn't seem to fit him too well. On this solo release, like the last release with Stryper (No More Hell To Pay), Sweet finds a way to snuggle up close to the heaviness and really slides into it like it's body armor. The songs are strong, the vocals are tough as well as sensitive, and the guitar work is Michael Sweet (who is perhaps the most underrated guitar player in the world today) at his very best.

File:5 The Gray Chapter Artwork.jpg
7.      .5: The Gray Chapter - Slipknot
This is a band that I haven't always had an abundance of affection. The heaviness, the screaming, the double bass drums.... It had me thinking something along the lines of yadda-yadda-yadda. I thought their Iowa release as well as their eponymous debut were more noise than anything else, and they seemed to be trying much too hard to be heavy, like so many new bands in the speed metal genre. Things changed with their Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) album, and their material started to sound more accessible and melodic without sacrificing the bludgeoning effects. This release takes over where Vol. 3 left off. Solid songwriting, amazing musicianship, and an inspired vocal intensity that seems to be originating in a very real place. Corey Taylor and his huge gang of masked madmen have really put it all together for an impressive set of extremely heavy music.

File:JudasPriestRedeemerSouls.png
6.      Redeemer Of Souls - Judas Priest
Wow, will the reign of the mighty Priest ever end?! Even with the loss of a key original member of the group (guitarist K.K. Downing), they put out their best record in years. With metal god singer Rob Halford spending the majority of the album in a lower vocal register, it happens to give the material even more weight. Instead of the screeching metal hellion, he's more the badass, "don't f**k with me" guy. The loss of Downing and the addition of guitarist Richie Faulkner seems to have given Priest the necessary shot in the arm that they needed. The guitar parts are complex and risky, which makes the band a fresh listen all over again.

File:Black Veil Brides IV (Black Veil Brides album).jpeg
5.      Black Veil Brides (IV) - Black Veil Brides
This was probably the biggest surprise of 2014 for me. I had never heard Black Veil Brides music prior to hearing this record, and I doubted I would enjoy their sound because of the company they keep. Being grouped in with many of the emo and alternative/modern rock bands of the day has swayed some hard rock fans from this band, and that's unfortunate. They prove to be an excellent young hard rock force with this release, and all fans of hard rock deserve to hear what they've done here.

4.      Lifting The World - Tom Sharpe
Now, for the most artistic entry on the list. This is a lush, epic masterpiece from a guy who has bared his soul within this music. Blending keyboards, percussion, and vocal elements within a symphonic ocean of sound, Sharpe has written something of an utopian-like score and it sounds pretty amazing.

File:Something Supernatural.jpeg
3.      Something Supernatural - Crobot
This band made me miss the 90's. Incorporating the best elements of Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, and even James Brown, Crobot has officially opened the proverbial can of whoop-ass with this stellar release. Great songs, talented musicians, and a raw intensity that I haven't heard in quite some time. This band is special.

File:Black Stone Cherry - Magic Mountain.jpg
2.      Magic Mountain - Black Stone Cherry
This is no surprise to those that have followed the progress of Black Stone Cherry. If you like classic "t-shirt and jeans" hard rock that has a southern rock tinge to it, this is the band for you. As they have done a number of times, they release a killer album of straight forward rock songs. These guys are excellent at the songwriting craft, and most of all they know how to keep things raw and intense. This record sounds like it could be their first. They continue to capture the young and hungry sound by delivering passionate vocals and unbridled, "cut loose" guitar solos. I hesitate to say that this is the best set in the Black Stone Cherry catalog because they have consistently delivered great quality for a number of years. This album is definitely one of the best for the band, and it was definitely one of the best I heard in 2014.

Album of the Year
File:The Pretty Reckless - Going To Hell (Official Album Cover).png
1.      Going To Hell - The Pretty Reckless
You want to talk about badass, this defines badass.
Sex symbol singer Taylor Momsen has just as much style and strength with her voice as she has sex appeal (and that's saying a whole lot). Aside from the voice and the great looks, she happens to be the co-writer of all these great songs as well. She is the dominant force here because she's the total package. Make no mistake, Momsen is the most badass rocker on the scene today. Putting this album at Number One was easy for me and I think it's spectacular, but the funny thing is, I'm not even sure it's the best from the band. Their previous effort, 2010's  Light Me Up, was just as strong or stronger. Unbelievable. Two albums, two classics. Badass. The Pretty Reckless has all the tools to be a force for decades to come.

Best Album of 2014 is Tom Petty's Hypnotic Eye
It was the biggest surprise because Tom Petty's career looked like it was on the wane; another classic rock band reduced to playing their greatest hits "live." The first single "American Dream Plan B" sounded so unlike Petty that I had to ask a friend who is a true fanatic if that really was him. On July 29th Hypnotic Eye was released. It debuted #1 on the Billboard 200. The album actually received radio airplay and a second single "U Get Me High." In fact, this album was Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers most successful in decades. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were the ones who really put it out there in 2014.
Honorable mentions:
Bob Seger - Ride Out. Best album that Bob has put out in years. He plays quite a few of the songs live, but this is Seger's last go around so it feels like a long good-bye.
AC/DC - Rock Or Bust. Really good album, true classic rock. I still have it in my truck, but it was released at the end of the year.

Dean H. - Illinois, USA
Hey doc, I have two for you:   Royal Blood - Royal Blood,  Crobot - Something Supernatural

Craig D. - California, USA
Usually I have a list of 4-5 albums that make the top cut. Less so this year. I was hoping that Chevelle's La Gargola would make the top step as they usually have won AOTY with previous new releases, as each successive album was better than the last. But this year I'd give it to Rival Sons with Great Western Valkyrie as the hands down winner.

Reijo P. - Finland

10. Flyleaf -
Between the Stars
Personally, I was quite surprised when I noticed that Machine Head had made such a great album. I have never been a big fan of theirs. In fact, I think "Supercharger" is one of the worst metal albums I have ever heard. This new album is even better than "Burn My Eyes" or "The Blackening" - but that is only my opinion. By the way, thank you for introducing The Pretty Reckless. I think this new album is even better than their debut which was also great. First Aid Kit is a female folk duo  - I think it is Swedish. Their third full-length is even better than the second one "The Lion's Roar". Nicki Minaj has a reputation mainly because of the shocking "Anaconda" music video, but the album also includes very emotional songs such as "Bed of Lies" and "Grand Piano". The honourable mention would go to Exodus, which released their best album since "Fabulous Disaster". One of the biggest disappointments was Pink Floyd's "The Endless River". It is better than the "The Division Bell" and other albums after "The Wall", but still not the same level I expected. I think "Piper" and "Dark Side" as well as "Wish You Were Here" are great albums, but their latest was far from that. But this is just MY opinion. And Sonata Arctica released their best album since "Reckoning Night" - maybe even their best - but time will prove that. Array is actually a rock band whose members live in Turku or near Turku but I think I didn't give them any bonus points for that - their album just sounds so good.
