Album of the Year 2015

Album of the Year

Welcome to the Album of the Year article for the year 2015!

As always, this list is a collection of records that moved ME - records that left an impression on ME. I am a big believer in the fact that music is a personal experience, and we all have different tastes - different likes and dislikes. My only purpose for compiling this list is to, perhaps, point you in the direction of something that might move you, and also to give you a glimpse at what was in my life musically during the twelve months we called 2015. This is not about debating which albums are "better," this is simply about the music. It's always about the music here at Dr. Music. With that said, let's talk about my list for the past year....

I personally think there is amazing music available to us each and every year, but we don't always have the good fortune to find it. For me, once again I found an abundance of worthy releases in 2015 that grabbed my attention away from many of the more popular acts of our time. While I was listening to great new acts like Revolution Saints and Twenty One Pilots, I wasn't able to find precious time with favorites like Scorpions, Saxon, Joe Satriani, or Shinedown - all of which had released new music within the year. Remember, the reason you don't see a lot of these great artists on my list is not because their material wasn't worthy of mention, it's simply because I never got a chance to sit down and absorb their latest releases. There's just too much out there to listen to for one person!

Honorable Mention:
Queensryche - Condition Human, James Taylor - Before This World, Shooting Star - Into The Night, Cherie Currie - Reverie, Lynch Mob - Rebel, Sweet & Lynch - Only To Rise, Motorhead - Bad Magic

Being one of the most difficult years to pick a list, it makes sense that there were a number of great albums that didn't make the Top 10. As I start to tell you about some of these I ask myself, "How did these not make the list?!" This has to be one of the best honorable mention lists that I've had in some years.

Let's start with Queensryche. Here's a band that had one of the best singers that the hard rock/metal genre had ever seen in Geoff Tate. He lets his ego get the best of him, the band tries to replace him, and they only get better. Todd LaTorre is a brilliant snapshot of a young Geoff Tate. Close your eyes and you'd swear it was 1990 and Tate was in tow. As they did with the self-titled album with LaTorre from a couple years ago, they return to the early Queensryche sound with some of their best material since Empire. There was another band that had a most welcomed re-birth in Shooting Star. This is a band that had some great melodic rock songs but got lost just before the 90's. I feel that their classic hit "Last Chance" from their 1980 debut is one of the best rock songs ever written. This Into The Night album is an impressive return to rock brilliance. And then there was Cherie Currie... The Runaways singer still has great pipes and some great songs. Her Reverie album was an excellent return to rock and roll. While we wait for Kenny Laguna to stop holding her guest star-studded, Matt Sorum-produced album hostage, we'll have to appreciate this great set in the interim. Michael Sweet has been all over these past few years. He had an intimate autobiography published, he did a great solo album that made my Top 10 last year, he cut what I thought was Stryper's best album this year, and he had a brilliant set of songs with guitarist George Lynch under the moniker Sweet & Lynch called Only To Rise. Lynch also had his greatest Lynch Mob effort with their Rebel album. Vocalist Oni Logan is amazing on this disc, and the songs are a groovy, blues-based hard rock that often sounds like Jake E. Lee's Badlands project - and that's always a great thing. And on the lighter side of things, the warm tone of James Taylor has never changed nor disappointed, but his Before This World release has some of the best songs he's done in decades.

Now, I saved this one for last so everyone understands why it's here. Sure, Motorhead's last album, Bad Magic, was done just months before their iconic singer's death. But make no mistake, Bad Magic is listed here because it's a great record. This should definitely be considered one of the band's best efforts, and it really does say a lot about Lemmy. This was recorded when he was battling illness, but yet it still has a vitality and an inspired sound. Not a charity pick here, just a well-deserved mention
.

It's always a struggle to find enough time to take in as many artists as I possibly can and to give them a fair amount of listening time. But, there are some things that just work their way into the fabric of your life. There is certain music that will define the current moment in time for you. Sometimes it's the same music that touches millions, and other times it's music that only a few come to know. But, it's that personal journey that is so very special to each of us, and I'd like to share my personal journey through 2015 with you....

10.    Blind Guardian - Beyond The Red Mirror
I know. Dozens of you are saying, "Who?" And, that's a crime. Considered a "power metal" band out of Germany, this is their tenth studio album. Their tenth. 10. All the people that say there's no good music out there are looking in the dark alleys of the Billboard Top 40. Do me a favor (and yourself, for chrissakes), pull this up on your Spotify account and listen to it all the way through. Then, be a human domino as you tumble from one related artist to another. So many of these bands have great vocal harmonies, brilliant and complex instrumentation, and beautifully written songs. This was the album that stuck with me from very early in the year, and it continues to feed a certain hunger for melodic progressive metal.

9.      Twenty One Pilots - Blurryface
This band is the face of the new generation, and it is anything but blurry. This band is very focused on writing a kind of Pop that is extremely unique. And I say Pop, but they really are so much more than that. You might consider them alternative, perhaps in the true sense of the word. They don't fit into any particular box comfortably, and that accounts for much of their appeal. The writing is quirky and smart, the music varies greatly throughout the record, and it always stays reputable and honest.

8.      Iron Maiden - The Book Of Souls
Iron Maiden - you know, that progressive metal band....
Yes, Maiden has officially cemented themselves in the realm of prog metal with this one. It's a position they toyed with on various tracks throughout the years, but this album finds them applying their usual formula to an even more lengthy and complex structure. Not a lot of big surprises, just another typical Iron Maiden masterpiece. Read the full review here.

7.      Mystery - Delusion Rain
One of the world's best prog bands returns to form with their sixth studio album, Delusion Rain. Mystery is one of the most impressive bands I've ever heard when they are hitting the mark. Their 2007 album, Beneath The Veil Of Winter's Face, just might be my favorite prog rock album of all-time. After it took my Album of the Year top spot in '07, the band went on to release a couple more records that just didn't strike me in the same way. Delusion Rain hits me like Beneath The Veil Of Winter's Face did. With new singer Jean Pageau in tow and sounding identical to former singer Benoit David, his contribution is remarkably brilliant. So much of their sound is driven by vocals, but their instrumentation is completely on par as well. Their sound is something that puts me in my happy place, regardless of any dark lyrical theme. Don't miss this one.

6.     Stryper - Fallen
Talk about a band improving like a fine wine... This is a band that has been completely reborn, not only in its Christian form. Stryper's last two albums stand head and shoulders above any of their past releases, and I like most of that stuff. Guitars are insanely great, and the songs are heavier and more solid than ever. You can read the full review here.

5.      Slayer - Repentless
Perhaps the most shocking entry on the list is this one, simply because of their hardship in the past few years and the significant loss of Jeff Hanneman, an integral part of their twin lead guitar formula and their overall sound. The band plugged Exodus guitarist Gary Holt into Hanneman's amps and Kerry King found another perfect partner in crime. The band once again parted ways with drummer Dave Lombardo before this one, and ended up bringing in Paul Bostaph for his first sessions with the band since his stay in 2001. With all of the controversy, death, and change, Slayer managed to pull off one of the best albums in their long catalog. Araya's barking sounds inspired and the songs lean more toward the Seasons In The Abyss-type of classic metal formula rather than their more hardcore thrash punk leanings. But please, don't take that to mean that the album is soft. It's still some of the most punishing metal you can find.

4.      Mark Ronson - Uptown Special

How do I even tell you about this one? This is right up there with Twenty One Pilots for being the most diverse entry on the list. It goes from a light, airy song like "Summer Breaking," which sounds like a 70's Alan Parsons pop song, to a downright filthy James Brown-inspired rap funk song like "Feel Right". Freakin' brilliant. The variation of vocalists makes this even more adventurous and entertaining from beginning to end. Even if you take the smash hit "Uptown Funk" off of this set, it still makes the list. Although, I must say, for all the young'ns who think Kanye West is funk, listen and hear what Ronson does on "Uptown Funk". THAT'S funk, old school style.

3rd Place

3.      Revolution Saints - Revolution Saints

Here's an album that sat on top of the list for months. This is the best melodic rock album I've heard in quite some time. Ex-Journey drummer Deen Castronovo does an amazing job singing, playing, and writing here. If you like the Styx, Journey, Foreigner, Night Ranger-inspired 80's melodic rock sound, you NEED this. You can read the full review and check out an interview with Deen Castronovo here.
2nd Place

2.      Adele - 25
Think whatever you like, but I think this girl is the best raw singer alive. What separates Adele from the Beyonces and Aguileras of the world is the fact that she impresses without the unnecessary melisma that infiltrates the soul/R&B singers of today. Instead of dissecting every word into 30 or 40 syllables and pounding you over the head with a vocal clinic in every song, she simply sings. Her lows are bone crushing, her highs are chilling, and her in between is seductive and special. The first time I listened to "When We Were Young" from this set, I wept. It wasn't the lyric that drove me to tears (in fact, I'm still not sure what it's about), it was just the magnitude of her voice. The comfort with which she sings is enticing and wondrous. She is the Mount Everest of vocal music; a peak that very few, if any, will ever reach. In other words, I kinda like Adele.

Album of the Year

1.      Ghost - Meliora
This was the most difficult year to pick a winner, and this is it.
I liked Ghost quite a bit going into this, but this set of songs is way beyond anything I imagined them capable of. Meliora in Latin means "the pursuit of something better," and that is definitely what the band achieved here. The songs are perfectly written and the instrumentation is mature and dynamic. Perhaps, what I love most about this band is the realm that they create through sound and imagery - a skill that is severely lacking in today's scene. You enter their world when you listen to this stuff. It's both unique and severely enticing; and yes, even a little creepy.

The only weakness I found with this album was its length, and I came to the realization that it works to their advantage. I want to hear more - a lot more. Coming in at a total time of 41:35 (with about 2:00 of intro-type stuff) is nothing to sneeze at, and what exists here is of the highest quality.
If you are a fan of melodic hard rock/metal, make yourself a part of their congregation and worship at the altar of some great music.

THE PATIENTS LISTS
Please Note: Because I publish my list during the first few weeks of the new year, some readers have chosen David Bowie's final album Blackstar, which was released in early 2016.

Johan C. - Belgium
I've got a Top 8 for you. In no particular order:
--- Janet Jackson - Unbreakable. A bit too long for sure, but I loved the crisp, powerful Jam & Lewis production and the diversity in song material. And the vocal resemblance is sometimes almost uncanny: if Michael would've been able to make an album in 2015, it would have sounded a lot like this one.
--- John Grant - Grey Tickles Black Pressure. As fascinating as his unforgettable 2013 Pale Green Ghosts: a deep voice, melodrama, electro pop and lyrics that bathe in self pity, sarcasm and hilarious observations. Captivating stuff.
--- Vetiver - Complete Strangers. A most pleasant surprise, this. Dreamlike, non-intrusive, soothing pop. A gently breeze, set to music.
--- Brandon Flowers - The Desired Effect. A shameless, colourful testimony to the fact that commercial pop is not a dirty word. And far better than the most recent Killers output.
--- Balthazar - Thin Walls. The best thing that came out of Belgium in 2015. Bold and brash, cocky and confident: arty indierock as it should be.
--- Mikal Cronin - MCIII. As if the Raconteurs made a new album: melodic guitar power pop with adventurous arrangements.
--- ELO - Alone in the Universe. A great return to form, even though the album is very conventional and unsurprising. Glad that the Genius called Jeff Lynne gave a new sign of life - and relieved that the result wasn't disappointing.
--- Grayson Hugh - Back to the Soul. An impressive, unconditional love for real, genuine, soul music is what makes this album such a treat.

Paul K. - Wisconsin, USA

I haven't been paying too much attention to new albums this year. Keep going to my old favorites, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, Carlos Santana, Allman Brothers, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Robert Cray, Kansas, Deep Purple, Marshall Tucker, Outlaws, Heartsfield, etc, just to say a few. Waiting for some new stuff to come out.

Leon T. - Maryland, USA
--- “Reaching for the Light” by King King  -  This band continues to amaze with each new release.  Blues with a kilt!
--- “Handmade” by The Ben Granfelt Band -  This is where Classic Rock and Bitchin’ Blues come together.
--- “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” by Nightwish – The first studio album with their latest front woman, Floor Jansen.  Stunning is putting it mildly.  Nightwish gets better with each new release and this is no exception.

Terry T. - Illinois, USA
Rattle That Lock - David Gilmour

Brandon S. - Illinois, USA
Mac DeMarco - Another One
Ghost - Meliora

Ken A. - Illinois, USA
Kintsugi by Death Cab For Cutie. It has taken me time to come around to it, but like all other DCFC albums, it grew on me.

I'm afraid there was nothing new that knocked my socks off. I do really like David Bowie's Blackstar album, but that's this year's.

Dean H. - Illinois, USA
Crobot - Something Supernatural
Heartless Bastards - Restless Ones
Ryan Adams - Live at Carnegie Hall
The Dead Weather - Dodge And Burn

Craig D. - California, USA
Normally its a close race, but this year it has to be the sophomore offering Winery Dogs (Hot Streak) .....now if Tool would just come out with a new album already, they'd be likely to win it hands down.

Reijo P. - Finland
1. Petri Laaksonen - "In Memoriam - Elät aina minussa" - This album I actually bought in December. It is about his mother and brother who passed away. Petri is a very popular Finnish composed and singer.
2. The Veronicas - "The Veronicas" - These two female singers made a great third album with a poppy sound.
3. The Neal Morse Band - "The Grand Experiment" - Good progressive rock from Neal Morse again. Mike Portnoy is the drummer of the band, again.
4. Fireflight - "Innova" - They have now a poppier sound but it is still very rocking. I saw them live in 2015 which may have affected a little bit in this list.
5. Stryper - "Fallen" - The best metal in the world with the best message in the world.
6. Slayer - "Repentless" - They are still making great thrash metal, with the speed of "Reign in Blood" and the "beauty" of "South of Heaven".
7. Ele - "Ele" - Using the old texts of Eino Leino and with superb vocal skills of Eva this is a good, touching album.
8. Pella - "Pella" - Happy dance pop songs from a girl who performed in a Finnish KIDSing program. She performed before Fireflight in Turku.
9. Anna Eriksson - "Gloria" - A fantastic second Christmas album by one of the most popular female artist in Finland.
10. Little Mix - "Get Weird" - A quite good girl group with their third album.

Ed S. - Illinois, USA
For 2015 the new release that had the most impact was Little Neon Limelight by Houndmouth.   Honorable mention goes out to Upon a Burning Body. They had a late '14 release called "The World is My Enemy Now"  that got me into them. Other than that, I spent the year falling in love with the Blues from the 60's/70's and even more time with the Children of Bodom. Apparently I was either angry or chillin' the whole year.

Thierry T. - Switzerland
For me the Album of the Year 2015 is David Gilmour - Rattle That Lock.
